by Farasbee

Acetone is a major component in nail paint removers and can be purchased at any chemist for cheap. It is a very versatile and Useful Chemical and Can be used more than just to clean off that old nail paint!

Wikipedia Describes Acetone as “Acetone is the organic compound with the formula (CH3)2CO, a colorless, mobile, flammable liquid, the simplest example of the ketones.”

Here’s My list of Things that Acetone can be used for.

1. As a great Solvent. Can Dissolve Most inks such as those from ball point pens and gel pens,Since these inks are all organic dye based.

2.Clean those ink stained clothes! Got Clothes Soiled with a leaky ball pen? Apply acetone liberally over the stain and rub the stain with a brush and then clean it with a regular detergent to clean the stain off! I have tried it on various cotton clothes with stains from ink as well as oil grease etc.

3. Cleaning PCBs, Soldering generally leaves behind a glassy brown residue. And even some fluxes tend to leave behind a tarry residue. These residues can increase the stray capacitance and cause improper functioning of the Circuit .Use a peice of cloth soaked in acetone to remove the residue.

4.Since Acetone is such a strong solvent It tends to sort of  ”corrode” Plastic. So you can use it to give a matte finish to a glossy textured plastic thing.

5. Use it to remove Sticky residue Left behind by the Sticker!- Some glues used in stickers are organic based and can easily dissolve in acetone. But be warned if you plan to remove the residue from a plastic surface you might end up dissolving some of the shiny plastic surface and you might get undesired results. So Please check on a small corner first !

6.To start a Camp fire!- Acetone is highly volatile and highly flammable so you can use it to get a cam fire started!

7.As a degreaser- Got some gold ornaments  that need cleaning ? Try cleaning it with acetone!Acetone dissolves the oxides and grease that gets accumulated on the metal surface over time and can be used to bring the shine back to those metal ornaments and jewellery!

8. To clean old rusty battery contacts. Acetone can be used to clean battery contacts that get corroded due to leaky batteries or get oxidised due to exposure to atmosphere!

Thats it! A list of uses for this great Chemical Acetone! I will update more uses of the chemical as and when i find more uses for it!
