How to setup minicom : A Serial Terminal Monitor in Ubuntu

Minicom is a menu driven communications program. It is a text-based modem control and terminal emulation program for Unix-like operating systems. Minicom includes a dialing directory, ANSI and VT100 emulation, an (external) scripting language, and other features. Minicom is a menu-driven communications program. It also has an auto zmodem download. A common use for minicom is when setting up a remote serial console, perhaps as a last resort to access a computer if the LAN is down.

To install Minicom, Follow the steps:-

Go to Applications – Accessories – Terminal update the apt cache with

sudo apt-get update

Install the Software with

sudo apt-get install minicom

Alternatively you can get Minicom via the Synaptic Package Manager.

Once Minicom is installed it is ready to use. To use it you have to configure it first according to your UART device configuration.

Select Applications -> Terminal

Now in order to find the serial port you are using use this command:

farasbee:~$ dmesg | grep tty

This will give an output like

[ 0.000000] console [tty0] enabled
[ 2837.482952] usb 2-1: generic converter now attached to ttyUSB0

What we are interested in is the name of the serial port, in this case ttyUSB0. To configure and use minicom use this command:

farasbee:~$ sudo minicom -s

having -s will prevent minicom from exiting abruptly if it encounter error upon invocation.
Select serial port setup from the menu and press enter which will give you some options to change.

After Selecting Serial port setup you will get a screen like this:

Type A to change the serial device, you likely want to set it to /dev/ttyUSB0 so it accesses your physical UART port though this may vary from PC to PC. You will also want to change any other settings appropriate for your board such as disabling hardware flow control, adjusting Baud Rate, Parity Bits, and Bits. To configure BPS/PARity/BITS type E, it will give a screen like this,

After Configuring Accordingly exit and after reaching Main menu screen set it as default by opting SAVE SETUP AS DFL and then exit.

Now to use minicom, use command

farasbee:~$ minicom
